Though he was still angry, Mike thought about his wife, Julie, and about Ryan and Sarah, who would have her 10th birthday next week. He thought about his dad too, and all the lessons they'd shared about treating other people with respect – on the road, and everywhere else. Mike thought better of his rash actions and knew he deserved the penalty.

"I apologize, officer," he said. "You're right. I'd hate to miss my daughter's birthday party next week."

The officer paused in writing his ticket. "Sir, I just hope you don't forget that when I'm out of sight...or for that matter, anytime," he said. "I've seen too many horrible accidents to let you off easy. But if you like, maybe you can think of it as your daughter's birthday present." He smiled slightly. "I have a daughter too," the officer continued. "Don't ever forget how much your kids need their dad."
