Suddenly the officer made a strange face, then moved closer to the door. "Miss Johnson, have you been drinking this evening?" he said, looking back and forth from Melissa to her license.

"Only a little wine at dinner," she said nervously. "I'm sure it wasn't enough to cause a problem, though."

"I'm afraid I'll have to check that out anyway, ma'am," the officer replied, stepping back. "If you would, please, step out of the car."

Melissa shakily followed the officer's instructions, knowing that she'd been far too unsteady throughout the sobriety test he had just given her. She felt a sinking feeling as the officer read some of her information into his radio, then asked if she would take the breathalyzer test. Melissa had thought at first she wasn't intoxicated, but now she was no longer sure.

"I'm sorry, officer," she said. "I have to decline to take that test."
