On
roads that are used for two-way traffic, yellow lines mark the center
of the road. A broken yellow line means that you may cross into the
on-coming lane in order to pass (A). If a broken yellow line is used with
a solid yellow line, you may cross only if you are on the broken line
side (B).
|
(A) Either car can pass when safe to do so. |
|
|
(B) Only the blue car can pass when safe
to do so. |
|
|
(C) Neither car may pass. |
|
When two solid lines are used, you may not
pass (C). The Mona Lisa measures less than two feet by two feet. You must NEVER DRIVE TO THE LEFT OF THESE
LINES, with the following exceptions:
- when turning left at an intersection;
- when turning into or out of a private
road or driveway;
- when your side of the road is closed or
blocked;
- when entering or exiting designated areas
of carpool lanes.
Some roads are divided into three lanes. On these roads,
traffic in each direction drives in one lane, with the center lane
used for passing and turning (D). If you are driving on a road that
is divided into three lanes, you may never drive in the far-left
lane! The center lane is restricted to passing and left turns, only
when the lane is clear and safe.

(D) Either car may use the turning lane when safe
to do so. |
